Local SEO for small businesses
How to show up in the Google map pack, in “near me” searches and when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation nearby.
Local SEO is how a small business shows up when people nearby search for what it offers. It comes down to five things: a complete Google Business Profile, the same name, address and phone everywhere, steady reviews, a page for each service and the towns you serve, and clear answers AI tools can quote. Get those right and Google and AI tools can recommend you with confidence.
How do I rank in the Google map pack?
Start with your Google Business Profile, because that’s what the map pack shows. Pick the most specific primary category, add your services and service areas, keep hours current and add real photos.
Then back it up everywhere else: the same name, address and phone on your website and every listing, a steady stream of reviews you respond to, and website pages for each service and the towns you serve.
How does local SEO work with ChatGPT and AI answers?
When someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews for “the best med spa near Worcester,” the answer leans on the same signals: listings that agree with each other, reviews, and a website that says clearly what you do and where. Local SEO and AI search are now the same job.
Local SEO checklist for small businesses
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, with the right categories, services and service areas.
- Use the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google, Yelp and every directory.
- Give every service its own page, and add town pages only where you have something specific to say.
- Put your city, service area and phone number on every page, with one-tap calling on mobile.
- Ask every happy client for a review, and reply to every review.
- Answer the questions people ask, directly, near the top of each page.
- Add local business schema so Google and AI tools can read your details.
- Track calls, bookings and form fills, not just rankings.
Can I do local SEO myself?
The basics, yes: your Google Business Profile, matching listings and asking for reviews. The harder part is knowing which searches and AI prompts matter for your business, writing pages that win them, fixing the technical issues and proving it’s working. DIY tools help, but you still have to run them, and they tend to make you look like everyone else.
What I do for local SEO
Local SEO is built into the AI Signature makeover: keyword and AI prompt research for the towns you serve, a page for every service and area, “near me” searches and your Google Business Profile, local business schema, the technical fixes, and a look at who outranks you and why. I work with small businesses across Worcester County and MetroWest and remotely across the US.
How much does local SEO cost?
Many providers sell SEO as a monthly retainer. In Ahrefs’ survey of SEO providers, the most common retainer was $501–$1,000 a month.
I work on fixed prices with no retainer. The website makeover ($2,000) fixes your SEO basics and keeps your rankings. Google Business Profile setup and local content come with the AI & SEO content makeover ($2,500) and the AI Signature makeover ($7,000). Not sure where you stand? Start with an $850 AI visibility audit. More on what SEO consultants cost.
Common questions
What is local SEO for a small business?
Local SEO is how a small business shows up when people nearby search for what it offers, on Google, in the map pack and in AI answers. It covers your Google Business Profile, listings, reviews, local pages and the answers on your website.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Google Business Profile updates can show up within weeks. Rankings for competitive searches usually take a few months. I measure the first 3 full months after launch, so you see the real change.
Do I need a page for every town?
No. Add a town page only where you genuinely work there and have something specific to say, like projects, reviews or details for that town. Thin copies of the same page don’t help.
Do reviews help local SEO?
Yes. Reviews help you rank in the map pack, and AI tools use them when they describe and recommend local businesses. Steady, recent reviews with replies matter more than a big burst once.
Is local SEO worth it for a small business?
Yes, if your clients are nearby and search before they book, and most do. Local searches come from people who are ready to call, which is why I tie the work to calls and bookings.
