SEO tools vs. hiring help: what you can do yourself
Which SEO and AI SEO tools are worth it for a small business, what you can do for free, and when it’s time to hire someone.
SEO tools are worth it if you’ll use them every week. They find problems and track progress, but they don’t fix your site, write your pages or decide what matters most for your business. Start with the free tools below. Hire help when you’ve run out of time, or when the fixes need strategy, writing or code.
What can I do myself with free tools?
| Job | Free tool | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Show up in the map pack and local results | Google Business Profile | It’s what Google shows first for local searches, and AI tools draw on it too |
| See what you rank for and what’s broken | Google Search Console | Shows your real searches, clicks and indexing errors |
| Cover Bing and Microsoft Copilot | Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places | Microsoft’s search powers Bing and feeds Copilot |
| Show up in Apple Maps and Siri | Apple Business Connect | Many iPhone owners search with Apple Maps |
| Check your schema markup | Google Rich Results Test, Schema Markup Validator | Confirms machines can read your business details |
| See what AI says about you | ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity | Ask them the questions your clients ask, with your town in them |
Do those six well and keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, and you’ve covered the basics most small businesses miss.
What do paid SEO and AI SEO tools do well?
- Find the keywords and AI prompts people use for your services
- Track your rankings and how often AI tools mention you
- Crawl your site for technical problems
- Show what competitors rank for and where their links come from
- Keep your listings consistent across many directories
They’re good at finding and tracking. I use them every day.
Where do tools stop?
- They flag problems. You still fix them. A list of 140 issues doesn’t tell you which 10 matter.
- They give everyone the same advice. Follow the same checklist as every competitor and you look like every competitor.
- They don’t know your business. No tool talks to your customers, reads your reviews or knows why people really book you.
- They don’t write in your voice. AI-written pages tend to sound like everyone else’s.
- They report rankings, not bookings. Whether it’s bringing in calls and sales is still on you to work out.
Do I need a special tool to show up in ChatGPT?
No. For most service businesses there’s no directory you submit to that guarantees AI mentions, and no plugin that makes ChatGPT recommend you. AI tools recommend businesses they can clearly understand and that other sources back up: a website that says plainly what you do and where, listings that match, recent reviews and pages that answer the questions people ask. Here’s how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
Are listing and citation services worth paying for?
They help when you have several locations or messy listings everywhere, because they push the same details to many directories at once. For most single-location businesses, get the ones that matter right by hand first: Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and the directories your industry actually uses. Paying to appear on hundreds of low-traffic directories rarely moves anything.
When should I hire help instead?
- You’ve had a tool for three months and the to-do list hasn’t moved.
- A competitor keeps getting named by AI and you can’t tell why.
- The fixes need strategy, new pages, writing or code.
- You want the work tied to calls, bookings and sales, not a score.
- Your time is worth more running the business.
Tools vs. a consultant vs. an agency
| DIY tools | A consultant like me | An agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Monthly subscription | One fixed price: $5,000 | Usually a monthly retainer |
| Who does the work | You | Me, start to finish | A team, through an account manager |
| Strategy for your business | Generic recommendations | Built from a full analysis of your business and customers | Varies |
| Writing and fixes | You | Included | Often extra |
| Proof it worked | Dashboards to interpret | Before-and-after results call, in plain English | Monthly reports |
I sit in between: more hands-on than a tool, without agency price tags. See what SEO consultants typically cost.
Common questions
Are AI SEO tools worth it for a small business?
Yes, if you’ll use them every week and act on what they find. They’re great at research and tracking. They won’t write your pages, fix your site or decide what to do first.
What’s the best free SEO tool for a small business?
Google Search Console and Google Business Profile. Search Console shows what you rank for and what’s broken. Your Business Profile is what Google shows first for local searches.
Can I do SEO for my small business myself?
You can do the basics yourself: your Google Business Profile, matching listings, asking for reviews and answering common questions on your site. Strategy, technical fixes and content that wins competitive searches are where most owners bring in help.
Do schema plugins help with AI search?
They help machines read your business details, which supports both Google and AI answers. A plugin only adds what you tell it, so the details have to be accurate and match your listings.
Is there a tool that submits my business to ChatGPT?
Not in the way a directory works. AI tools learn about your business from your website, your listings, reviews and other sites that mention you, so that’s where to put the effort.
